Patrycja Paruch – materials physicist
In this video, materials physicist Patrycja Paruch takes us into her research world at the University of Geneva. In her laboratory in the basement she uses high-precision scanning microscopy to study the relationship between structure and properties of materials at the nanometer scale.
A central focus of her research is on so-called domains and domain walls, as found for example in magnets. Particularly fascinating: while the material itself may be insulating, these extremely thin domain walls suddenly behave like electrical conductors. An important application of this property is so-called domain wall nanoelectronics. These tiny structures are used to create electronic components such as diodes or logic circuits — a promising approach for the electronics of the future.
